Estimating Deck Repair: Boards, Railings and Hidden Rot
See It in Person
Deck repair is one job where photos usually aren't enough. Walk it, push on boards, check the railings and look underneath.
What to Price
- Number of boards and their length.
- Material: pressure-treated, cedar or composite.
- Railings and balusters.
- Stairs.
- Hardware and fasteners.
Hidden Rot
What's under the boards might be worse than the boards. Say in the estimate that joist or framing damage found during the work will be quoted separately before you proceed.
Know Your Limits
Structural deck work and anything that needs a permit may be beyond handyman scope in your area. Know your local rules and refer out when needed.
Materials Cost
Record materials cost on the job. Lumber prices move; your estimates should follow.
