Auto-Routing for Handyman Vans: When It Helps and When to Override It
What Auto-Routing Does
Auto-routing puts a van's stops in order based on distance, closest first from your shop. For a van with six or more stops, it usually beats the order you'd build in your head.
When It Shines
- Days of many short jobs: faucets, doors, TV mounts.
- Gutter cleaning days with eight or ten addresses.
- Property manager days across many rental homes.
When to Override
- A customer who can only be home in the morning.
- A job that needs a helper who joins at noon.
- An outdoor job that should wait for the frost to burn off.
- A stop at the supply house that has to happen first.
A Good Routine
Auto-route, then look at the result for ten seconds. Move any time-sensitive job into place. Save.
Measuring It
Compare clocked hours to job hours over a few weeks. If the gap shrinks after you start auto-routing, that's drive time you got back.
